In order to rank our country among middle-income countries, to realize the right of citizens to live in a comfortable and suitable environment, and to implement a green economy strategy that is resilient to climate change, environmental protection issues are being given special attention by the government.
Accordingly, before 1988, it was organized as a department under the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Bureau, and from 1988 to January 1995, it operated under the name of the Environmental Protection Bureau. From February 1995 to 2011, it was established under the name of the Environmental Protection Authority under the Proclamation No. 2/1995 issued to reorganize the Addis Ababa City Administration with a new structure, re-establishing the municipal and executive bodies. The Environmental Protection and Urban Development Commission, established in 2011 by the Executive Bodies Reorganization Proclamation No. 64/2011, is currently carrying out its responsibilities and functions to ensure that the city remains clean, green and suitable for its residents by strengthening the management of environmental pollution, natural resources and green areas.
Although the aim of all these efforts is to protect the rapidly expanding and growing city from various pollutants and to prevent its natural resources from being depleted, the city's air continues to be polluted by smoke from vehicles, industry, fuel and waste incineration, and its residents continue to be exposed to respiratory and other health problems. The water bodies that intersect the city are polluted by solid and liquid waste from industries, institutions and homes and cannot be used for any purpose; As the river flows out of the city, however, it is known that the local residents are using the water, which not only endangers the community but also damages the beauty and tourist attraction of the city. The pollution of the rivers is caused by harmful chemicals released from factories, as well as sewage from various homes and institutions, which is contaminated with microorganisms, and the use of them for vegetable production and animal husbandry is known to be very harmful to health. In general, the waste management and disposal system is not in line with the growth of the city and the civilization of the time, and they also contribute to the deterioration of health, odor, and appearance.
