Efforts to safeguard the rivers of Addis Ababa from contamination

There are about 76 tributaries and main rivers in Addis Ababa, according to the city's Environmental Protection Authority.
In connection with the expansion of the city and service institutions, especially settlements along the rivers have been causing pollution, says the authority's Deputy General Manager, Aseged Hailegiorgis.
It is known that the city administration has issued and implemented Regulation No. 180/2017 on the Prevention of Riverside Development and Pollution to address this problem.
Thus, work is underway to make the riverside development area beautiful, clean and green.
The Addis Ababa rivers, which have been used as garbage dumps and industrial wastewater disposal for many years, are also being cleaned.
The Addis Ababa City Administration Law Enforcement Authority, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Authority, has been providing extensive awareness training to the city's residents, manufacturers and service providers on this regulation.
However, more than two thousand individuals, as well as industrial and factory owners and service providers, were found to be discharging pollutants into the river.
Ato Aseged Hailegiorgis said that a fine of nearly 120 million birr was collected from those found guilty in this regard in an interview with FM Addis Live.
He urged the public to take responsibility for implementing the awareness provided and to play their role in creating a clean environment for themselves and the next generation.
